Using Imagery To Advocate A Message

In the 1997 poster for the “AIGA Literacy Campaign”, John Bielenberg creates an image advocating for the importance of reading and the knowledge children will stem from it. With technology starting to advance, there was an initiative to remind parents that the intelligence and growth that comes from this act will ensure their child’s benefit. Literacy is an extremely detrimental thing within society and needs to be advocated for.The challenge for Bielenberg was not using any words to promote this. He wanted the picture to be moving enough for people to understand.

Here you can see another poster created by John Bielenberg for his campaign “Think Wrong”. He believes that society is used to their destructive ways, which is why people need to “think wrong”. Bielenberg believes going against usual actions in order to correct the problem that is at hand is the key to change the world. The man with his head in the sand is a way to show that we’re blinded by what we think is right. This is just another example of how he uses his imagery to promote his cause. However, in contrast to his other poster, this one has text.
